Tata Power’s strategic engineering division on December 6 received an order from the Union defence ministry for the supply of Pinaka Multi Rocket Launcher System (MRLS) to the Indian Army. The order is worth over Rs 200 crore. While this is a remarkable testimony to the Union government’s ongoing Make in India campaign, it also provides the end-user Indian Army an option of having faster upgrades, technology refreshes, reduced repair downtime and complete in-country lifecycle support. Multi-barrel rocket launcher system Pinaka is an area weapon system that supplements the existing artillery gun at ranges beyond 30km, and has a quick reaction time and high rate of fire. Its success has been documented during the Kargil conflict, where it was successful in neutralising enemy positions on mountain tops, and has earned confidence of the Indian Army
