Two persons, including a teen, were killed in separate mishaps here on Sunday morning.

While 15-year-old Akaash Ponko, a resident of Beldih Gram, was crushed by a speeding truck on Marine Drive in Bistupur around 4am, a 50-year-old unidentified man was killed at Nildih Chowk in Golmuri after his cycle was hit by a vehicle around 8.30am.

Police said Akaash and another youth Rinku Kumar (20), who were sleeping along Marine Drive, came under the wheels of a truck which was coming from Mango.

“The truck on its way to Adityapur ploughed through both of them. While Akaash died on the spot, Rinku is battling for his life at Tata Main Hospital,” said Bistupur OC Rajesh Prakash Sinha.

“From the tyre trail, it seems the truck was cruising at top speed,” he said.

Local resident Brundaban Mahali said, “Due to high humidity and heat on Saturday night, people living in Beldih Gram slept along Marine Drive to enjoy the cool breeze of the Subernarekha. Unfortunately, one of them was killed.”

The second mishap took place at Nildih Chowk on Sakchi-Telco Road. The victim was riding a cycle towards Telco when a vehicle hit him from behind. As he lay injured on the road, a police patrolling party rushed him to Tata Main Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries half-an-hour later.

Golmuri OC Ranvijay Sharma said the victim’s identity could not be ascertained yet.“We have circulated the victim’s photograph in social media. But nobody has identified him yet,” Sharma said.

Sharma said the nature of head injuries sustained by the victim suggested that he was hit by a truck or a trailer, but since the area was deserted, there were no eyewitnesses.
