A two-member team from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) will evaluate the overall functioning of Tata Steel Zoological Park on September 13.

The team — comprising CZA evaluating and monitoring officer Brij Kishore Gupta and deputy director (retd) of Hyderabad’s Nehru Zoological Park M. Naveen Kumar — will arrive in Jamshedpur via Ranchi on Wednesday. The day after will be reserved for sessions with senior functionaries of the zoo as well as Tata Steel Zoological Society.

The experts are coming with a questionnaire on the functioning of the zoo and will meet members of the managing committee at length. The CZA representatives will also visit animal enclosures and veterinary clinic on the zoo premises. Dhalbhum divisional forest officer (DFO) K.J. Bhutia is expected to apprise them of the existing facilities and improvements that are needed.

The renewal will depend on the evaluation report the CZA team will prepare. The recent intrusion at the tiger enclosure and impending delay in raising the height of the boundary wall will also be topics of discussion when the team holds a meeting with the DFO and zoo officials.

Rajnish Kumar, a member of Tata zoo’s managing committee, said the inspection was routine. “Zoos in India cannot operate without being accredited by the CZA, which operates under the Union ministry of environment and forests. The CZA carries out evaluation of a zoo on the basis of standards prescribed in the Recognition of Zoo Rles (1992) under the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972,” he explained.

Tata zoo — the only privately owned zoo in the country — received its first conditional accreditation on August 19, 1993, a year after it came into existence. Thereafter, accreditation has been renewed by the CZA periodically.

The last renewal was on February 25, 2010, after an August 18, 2009, evaluation by Ajit Patnaik, the chief executive of Chilika Development Authority and P.K. Roy, a veterinary officer of Nandankanan in Odisha.

“The current accreditation of Tata zoo will expire on February 28 next year,” Kumar pointed out, adding that the CZA normally provided conditional accreditation to a zoo for a period of two years and, after reviewing the fulfilment of stipulated conditions, the same was renewed for further period.
