Ranchi, Dec. 9: Shorn of her hair and stripped of her clothes, a 29-year-old tribal woman was paraded by villagers this afternoon in Manhou under the Khunti police station area in Ranchi district as her father looked on. Her crime: she had married a boy from another community, police said.

Her father has been named the main accused in an FIR lodged with the police. Members of the village panchayat, who carried out the sentence, also flogged her in public before stripping and then parading her. The incident took place around 4 pm today.

Khunti deputy superintendent of police Madhusudan Bari said the girl was in love with a Ghasi boy.

?They had an affair for about two months. The villagers knew about it and were opposed to the idea. About a month ago, a fight broke out between the two families,? said Bari.

?Matters came to a head today when the couple disclosed that they had got married in court. Once they produced the marriage certificate, the villagers went berserk,? Bari said.

Police sources said, a panchayat was called and the girl was ?tried? and ?sentenced?. ?The police got to know about the incident quite some time after it happened. The boy told us about it,? they said.

?In a normal case, the girl?s father would come rushing to us pleading to save his daughter. But no such thing happened. We are sure that the entire incident took place with the consent of the girl?s family,? said a police official.

Police said: ?We took the girl to a hospital. She is in shock, but she is out of danger. An FIR has been lodged against the villagers and the girl?s father is the prime accused,? officials said.
