All thanks to Carmel Community College, hosted by Sacred Heart Convent School, which has been imparting professional training to girls like Tanya since August 28, 2015. Tanya and 15 others comprised the first batch of a six-month tailoring and embroidery certificate course, which they completed last Monday.
All showcased their creations, from gowns to kurtis and tops to dresses, at the Sacred Heart Convent School exhibition, with one dream - opening a tailoring shop or running an apparel business.
The Carmel Community College will not only provide them certificates but sewing machines too.
"We can now make dresses and do beautiful embroidery so that we can start our own business," said Tanya.
She added she used to attend college in the morning and the tailoring and embroidery classes in the afternoon.
Gopeshwari Rai (28) preferred attending the training over sitting idle at home. "I did not have any skills but always wanted to earn. A friend told me about Carmel Community College, which offered a six-month certificate course at a very nominal rate," she said.
The Carmel Community College, an initiative of Apostolic Carmel, offered the tailoring course at a nominal fee of Rs 600 for six months.
Sister Assumpta Crasta of the Carmel Community College said their aim was to help poor women acquire skills so that they became self-reliant.
