Ranchi, Dec.15: Work at the heavy machines building plant of Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC)-Ranchi was today disrupted for nearly two hours after angry workers led by senior union leader marched to the corporate office at Dhurwa to demand compensation for the next of kin of a contract worker who died yesterday morning while on duty.

The deceased worker, identified as Kishore Kachchap, 50, had collapsed yesterday at 10am while he was attending to a fabrication work at the HMBP plant. Company sources revealed that Kachchap had a long history of epilepsy and that he collapsed while on duty.

He was taken to ESI Hospital at Namkum, which referred him to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for advanced treatment. However, Kachchap breathed his last on his way to the hospital.

"This morning, I led some 100 workmen to the company headquarters and demanded compensation for the next of kin of the deceased workman. We met HEC CMD Avijit Ghosh, who assured us that all help, including a job for his son, would be given as per company rules. We have since called off our agitation," Rana Sangram Singh, general secretary of the Hatia Project Workers Union, said.

He added that they were all happy that the issue had been resolved amicably.

Company sources revealed that since the deceased workman was a contract worker, all help, as per rules, would be given to the next of kin, clarifying that it would be up to his contractor to provide a job to his son.
