Ranchi/Jamshedpur, Jan 13: A squirming Congress today appeared to be giving second thoughts to the list of candidates approved by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) late last night.
The party could make a few changes in the list, claimed Congress insiders, in view of the rebellious mood among workers.
With four of the six Congress MPs from the state getting their sons the Congress ticket, party workers were far from amused. Nor were they impressed with the party?s attempt to field a dozen new faces, among them four women, and all the eight sitting MLAs.
For the first time, the Congress has chosen to field two women from the two urban constituencies in Jamshedpur. While there was guarded optimism in Congress ranks over the nomination of Ebha Shamim, the grand-daughter of Surendra Nath Banerjee, one of the earliest leaders of the Congress, from Jamshedpur (West), there was virtual rebellion over the nomination of Rajni Singh from Jamshedpur (East).
Late in the night, the Congress nominated R.B.B. Singh as the candidate from Jamshedpur (East).
Nor were workers amused to find Kunti Soy, widow of Vijay Kumar Soy, being thrown into the fray in Kharsawan to take on chief minister Arjun Munda.
The nomination of Gopal Sahu, a prominent businessman and brother of former Congress MP Shiv Prasad Sahu, from Ranchi and that of Pratibha Pandey from Hatia also seemed to deject Congressmen who felt that the candidates were ?relatively weak? and would have little chance against their more formidable rivals.
Vimal Sumbrui alias ?Hitler?, son of veteran Bagun Sumbrui, Roshan Surin, son of state Congress chief Sushila Kerketta, Ajay Dubey, son of Dhanbad MP Chandrashekhar Dubey, and finally Irfan Ansari, the doctor-son of Godda MP Furqan Ansari, have been fielded by the Congress from Chaibasa, Khunti, Vishrampur and Jamtara respectively. The party has also fielded National Students? Union of India president Sanjay Lal Paswan.
Significantly, Union minister for food processing Subodh Kant Sahay failed to get either his brother Sunil or his wife Rekha a ticket. But a former air force officer, T.N. Tripathy, is reported to have been offered the nomination from Daltonganj at his behest.
Similarly, Lohardaga MP Rameshwar Oraon failed to get his son Rohit Oraon a party ticket but managed to successfully plead the case of Sukhdev Oraon, the circle officer at Bero, to contest for the Lohardaga Assembly seat.
