Soccer qualifiers from Tuesday - Six teams in contention for two Federation Cup spots

Jamshedpur is ready for another dose of soccer action as the qualifying round of the prestigious Federation Cup comes to the city on September 11.

The event, which will be held at JRD Tata Sports Complex, will be a six-day affair with six teams playing each other for two spot in the Federation Cup that will be held in Ranchi and Siliguri from September 19.

The teams that would be vying for qualification this time around include the likes of Calcutta-based Mohammedan Sporting and Kalighat Milan Sangha, who would lock horns with Aizawl FC (Mizoram), Royal Wahingdoh (Meghalaya), Vasco Sporting Club (Goa) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (Bangalore).

Officials said, barring Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, all the other teams in fray have played in the final round of the 2012 I-League. The Bangalore outfit, they said, had been relegated due to lack of points and hence has to play in the qualifiers.

The event is being logistically supported by the sports department of Tata Steel, who are in constant touch with officials of All India Football Federation (AIFF) to ensure that the qualifiers go off smoothly.

“We were in talks with the national federation for hosting the event,” confirmed the steel giant’s sports department head Captain Amitabh.

City-based FIFA referee Binod Kumar Singh told The Telegraph that the teams would be divided into two groups of three each for the event.The top team from each group will get a chance to play in Federation Cup mains.

Teams who have already booked a federation Cup berth are Dempo, Mumbai FC, Pailan Arrows, Lajong FC, Salgaocar, Pune FC, Prayag United and United Sikkim FC, who will play in Ranchi. The Bengal town of Siliguri, however, will host the other teams, which include the glamour clubs of Churchill Brothers, Air India, Mohun Bagan, Sporting Clube de Goa, ONGC, East Bengal and the two Jamshedpur qualifiers.

According to schedule, Mohammedan Sporting will take on Aizawl in the opening match on September 11 while Kalighat will lock horns with Royal Wahingdoh the next day.

The next day, that is September 13, will see Hindustan Aeronautics Limited with Aizawl while Kalighat takes on Vasco on Friday.

The other matches scheduled include Hindustan Aeronautics Limited versus Mohammedan Sporting (September 15) and Royal Wahingdoh versus Vasco on September 16.

The Federation Cup will start simultaneously in Ranchi and Siliguri on September 19 and conclude on September 30.

The semi-final of the qualifiers is scheduled to be held in Ranchi on September 26 and in Siliguri on September 27. Siliguri has also been picked to host the final.
