Ranchi, April 4: Mayor Rama Khalkho and deputy mayor Ajay Nath Shahdeo will not get any salary, at least for now.

State legislators have apparently forgotten to frame rules and enact them for the recently elected civic body representatives.

“There is no rule/act that specifies a monthly remuneration to the elected representatives of the urban civic bodies. We have learnt that some provision has been made by the elected civic body representatives in Bihar. We would see if the same can get implemented here,” said a senior official at the state urban development department.

Sources in the department said that the government was not sure when the civic body elections would take place and thus it did not frame rules for the monthly remuneration and other benefits for the elected representatives.

Other government authorities also restricted themselves from framing rules for the conduct of the elections.

The civic body polls were held after a gap of 22 years. Now, with the Bihar government finalising increased remuneration slabs for all civic body representatives — mayor, deputy mayor, ward commissioner (in case of a corporation) and chairman, vice-chairman and ward councillors (in case of municipality and notified area committees) — authorities here are contemplating to introduce something similar if the issue is raised by the various stakeholders.

The Bihar government has offered a proposal of a monthly remuneration of Rs 4,000 for the mayor and Rs 3,000 for deputy mayor of a corporation. The remuneration is less for other members.

The members here are entitled to a telephone connection, a vehicle, personal chamber, a government deputed personal secretary and an office — arrangements for which are being done but the RMC authorities have no idea about their monthly salary.

“When the last civic body elections were conducted in the state, there was no provision for a monthly remuneration for urban representatives,” a source pointed out.
