SAFETY FIRST: A cop pulls up an elderly man during the helmet checking drive in Sakchi, Jamshedpur, on Sunday.East Singhbhum traffic police carried out simultaneous crackdowns in Sakchi, Bistupur, Golmuri, Mango and Jugsalai from 10am till late evening. City SP Prabhat Kumar supervised the drive in Sakchi. According to the Motor Vehicles Act, the fine for riding without a helmet is Rs 270.In Sakchi, over 300 were caught and fined while in Bistupur, another 200 faced the music. More than 100 among these offenders were students who didn't have valid documents either. Those without licence were fined of Rs 500 each and for missing insurance papers, an additional Rs 1,000 was levied.A student of Jamshedpur Co-operative College, Sudhir Kumar, was hauled up in Sakchi for not wearing a helmet on his way to tuition. "I usually wear one. But today, I left in a hurry and forgot my helmet. I paid a price for that," he told this newspaper. Picture by Bhola Prasad
