Jamshedpur, Jan. 30: Hosts Ranchi University quickly overcame the disappointment of a poor show from their trump card Reena Kumari to emerge as the overall champions in the All-India Inter-University championship which concluded at the JRD Tata Sports Complex today.
Choudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, won the runner-up slot. Ranchi University secured 18 medals ? 8 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze ? while the Meerut unit slogged hard to pocket 12 ? 5 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze. Ranchi University also notched up individual honours to Ram Awadhesh who bagged the overall title in the FITA men?s category with 104 points.
Olympian Sumangala Sharma of Choudhary Charan Singh University, with 107 points, won the title in the women?s section. L. Bombayla Devi of Manipur University and Olympian Reenan Kumari of Ranchi University finished second and third in FITA individual women?s category, respectively, while Gurpal Singh of Punjab University and Bulbul Marandi of the host varsity ended up with second and third slots.
Ranchi University and Choudhary Charan Singh University reached the top on the basis of their superlative performances in the FITA team event. The former edged out Delhi University to the top slot with 221 points in the eve?s category, while the latter tripped the hosts to the post with a total of 236 points.
