Ranchi, May 20: Two Ranchi policemen, found stealing power during a surprise raid at their quarters this evening by the anti-power theft cell of Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL), got their connections cut.

Lalpur traffic police station in-charge Pramod Ranjan and constable Ram Sudhir Jha had been drawing power illegally at quarters Nos. 3 and 4, Line Tank Road. None had installed the power reading meter.

A team of JBVNL officials led by assistant engineer J.N.K. Singh and linemen reached Line Tank Road at 5.30pm. Though Ranjan allegedly tried to stop the team, things moved swiftly.

Power connections at the duo's homes were cut. An FIR would be lodged against the duo and fines imposed on them, JBVNL assistant engineer Singh said. "Police personnel quarters are known for power theft. Some cops believe they are above the law. We want to say no one is," a team member said. The team checked electricity connection of as many as 32 quarters.

Police quarters apart, the team raided Kutchery Chowk circle area, including private and government homes at Deputy Para, Line Tank, Radium Road, Kalibabu Street.

Solar rates

Acting on a petition from M/S Chotanagpur Green Energy Development Private Limited, Jharkhand State Electricity Regulatory Commission on Wednesday held a public hearing in Ranchi to fix tariff for solar energy. The company proposed a rate of Rs 10.10 per unit (KWh). The commission will decide later.
