Former Bihar Ranji skipper V. Venkat Ram will now revamp cricket in Assam.
A former off-spinner, Venkat has been appointed as the technical director-cum-chief coach of the Assam Cricket Association's (ACA) academy at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
Jamshedpur-based Venkat (60) will leave for Guwahati in the first week of September. "The ACA has recruited me for two years. It's a challenging job and I am looking forward to it," said Venkat, who had played 68 first-class matches and scalped 217 wickets.
Venkat said he was asked to report to the academy on September 1 for assisting coaches involved in the ongoing Ranji camp in Assam. "But I have some commitments here (Jamshedpur) and will leave for Guwahati only in the first week of September," he added.
Venkat has also worked as a spin bowling coach at the Bangalore-based National Cricket Academy as well as the zonal cradle in Calcutta. Keeping Venkat's experience in mind, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had invited Venkat to join a group of coaches entrusted to work on bowlers with suspect action in 2009. He now wants to put all his experience to his new assignment.
Venkat said he would be aided by six assistant coaches and three trainee coaches at the academy, which will spread wings to different zones within the next four months. The academy will also have three visiting sports psychologists, video analyst, trainer and physiotherapist.
"My job also involves development of coaches and creation of a reserve bench," the former East Zone cricketer said.
Venkat had given a presentation in Guwahati recently before he was handed over the job by the ACA. "Former Indian left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi will also be a part of the academy and six satellite cradles. Besides the academy, I will be also involved in streamlining cricket activities in Assam districts and also work with the senior (read Ranji) and junior cricketers," said Venkat, who runs a cricket academy in Kadma.
