Jharkhand’s first test tube baby was born at IVF Fertility and Research Centre, Ranchi, on Saturday. It was a proud moment for Meenakshi and M.K. Singh of Dhanbad who become the parents of the boy child using the test tube technique. The baby, weighing 2.6 kg, was born after a caesarean operation. The operation was conducted by gynaecologists Shobha Chakraborty and J. Bhattacharya. The mother and the baby are both in good health, doctors said. The governing body of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) met on Saturday and short-listed 19 out of 41 applicants for the interview of the post of director. The meeting was headed by chief secretary G. Krishnan. The names were shortlisted by a four-member screening committee consisting of medical education secretary Vinod Agarwal, AIIMS professors P.K. Dave and S.C. Tiwari and local doctor K.K. Sinha. The RIT Alumni Association organised a curtain-raising programme in Mumbai on Sunday for their global summit to be held in Jamshedpur. “The curtain-raiser is a follow-up of the Mumbai show organised by the government,” said the principal co-ordinator of global summit, Dilip Chowdhury. The association will not only project the potentials of the power sector but will also highlight the participation of private parties in the road sector as stipulated earlier by the government. The residents of Namkom, led by local MLA Sawna Lakra, laid siege to the Namkom police station on Saturday, demanding the removal of the officer-in charge. Sources said the incident took place around 3 pm when about fifty youths took to the streets shouting slogans against the officer accusing him of being hand-in-glove with criminals of the area. Officials of the Namkom police station said Lakra addressed the gathering, which had assembled near the police station. “During the last one month, the police have nabbed five persons involved in the business of illicit liquor. The residents of the area took it as anti-tribal drive,” police sources said. Dalit Adhikar Suraksha Manch will organise a rally and a mass gathering at Jaipal Singh Stadium on Monday.
