Award for Mecon officials E-campaign Neyveli project Congress salvo BJP drive THUMBS DOWN

Award for Mecon officials

Four Mecon officials —A.K. Saxena, R.C. Khowala, N.S. Tekade and Sanjay Sen — have jointly been awarded the M. Visvesvaraya Medal for 2002 for their paper “Environment-friendly coke ovens-design, operation and maintenance”. The award will be presented to them on the occasion of 17th Indian Engineering Congress to be held in Patna on December 20. Mecon is the recipient of the award for the third consecutive year. The paper suggests some clean technologies, which will bring down the level of emission considerably. The paper also highlights various operations and maintenance measures, which will lead to a better environment.

E-campaign

Infosys Solution Computer Education and Services will start a computer literacy campaign from December 2 in Ranchi. Participants for the programme will be given a crash course in BASIC, operating systems, Windows and Office Management. As a bonus package, students will be given tips on net surfing, said the institute director Ram Agarwal in a release.

Neyveli project

Mecon has added another feather to its cap with the commissioning of the first unit of 2x210 MW capacity thermal power plant of Neyveli Lignite Corporation in Tamil Nadu and has been synchronised with the grid. The second unit is in the final stage of commissioning . The plant has been designed to use lignite instead of coal for power generation. This is the first utility power project for which Mecon has provided detailed consultancy, construction, supervision, testing and start-up commissioning service.

Congress salvo

Jharkhand Youth Congress leader Ajay Rai has charged the government for being involved in corruption and formulating faulty policies for the benefit of the commercial classes. The leaders are busy making money in a society where the welfare of the masses has taken a backseat, said Rai in a release.

BJP drive

Bhartiya Janata Party has launched its membership drive. According to a BJP press release, to give the membership drive a concrete shape, meetings of five state units will be held at different districts, on December 4. State unit president and Rajya Sabha member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Abhaykant Prasad, will preside over the meeting of Palamau division while state organisation secretary Hridyanath Singh will chair the meeting of Singhbhum division.
