Jamshedpur, May 22: Serpentine queues outside the computerised reservation counter at Tatanagar railway station might become a thing of the past.

Come July 1 and passengers will be able to avail of the online railway reservation facility sitting at their homes or offices. Tatanagar, which has been placed in the “A” category of railway stations, will be the first in Chakradharpur railway division of South Eastern Railway to start the online reservation facility. The commercial department of Chakradharpur division has been entrusted with the job of implementing the facility.

According to railway sources, the facility will help passengers to book their tickets from Tatanagar to any other destination.

The logistics are being worked out by the commercial department in association with signalling and telecom departments, to implement the facility by July 1.

Sources said the facility is expected to be inaugurated by general manager of South Eastern Railway V.N. Garg.

Senior divisional commercial manager of Chakradharpur division M.N. Ojha said: “The online facility would not only help to avoid overcrowding of passengers at the computerised reservation centre but will also eliminate possibilities of harassment of passengers by touts.”

According to him, passengers who avail of the facility should have an Internet connection so that they can open a site, which would be provided by railways, for booking tickets. Besides, the passenger should also be a credit card holder of either UTI, ICICI or IDBI banks.

Passengers opting for the facility will have to provide details which they usually fill in the reservation slips and also mention the credit card number at the time of booking so that the fare can be debited to his account.

The name of the site for booking tickets would be announced during the formal inauguration of the facility.

Ojha said all the details pertaining to reservation like reservation status, waiting list or confirmation of tickets will be made available to passengers on the site.
