Rail fence to stop shortcuts

Tatanagar station authorities on Friday put up a new five-feet iron fence between platforms 1 and 2 to prevent passengers from using the tracks as a shortcut to hop from one platform to another risking their lives. The barricade replaces the three-feet fence which was put up a fortnight ago.

Jamshedpur: Tatanagar station authorities on Friday put up a new five-feet iron fence between platforms 1 and 2 to prevent passengers from using the tracks as a shortcut to hop from one platform to another risking their lives. The barricade replaces the three-feet fence which was put up a fortnight ago.

Tatanagar Railway Protection Force inspector MK Singh said the barrier has been designed in such a way that no one can climb on it and cross over to the other side. He said the fence's success can be gauged by the fact that nobody even tried to breach it right through the day.

"The barrier was put up at 8am. Although several passenger trains arrived and left, not even a single passenger was seen trying to cross the fence in order to reach the other platform," said Singh. He said passengers who got down from various trains on both the platforms either used the overbridge or the safe passage through the tracks at the end of the platform.

Over the past two weeks, RPF personnel regularly conducted drives to prevent passengers from jumping over the three-feet high barrier. During this period, over 50 passengers were arrested and sent to the railway magisterial court in Chakradharpur or at the camp court in Buramaines for prosecution.
