Rail boss vows station overhaul

Dhanbad railway station may soon get a makeover, thanks to general manager of East Central Railway, Hajipur, Rajiv Mishra.

Mishra, who inspected the station on Friday, gave a slew of instructions to improve passenger amenities both at the main premises of the station and the newly constructed south extension.

Mishra, who came to Dhanbad on Thursday night from Patratu, started his inspection at main station complex around 9.20am on Friday.

He instructed the divisional railway manager of Dhanbad Manoj Krishna Akhauri to carry out repair work of the main station complex, which has embarrassing and unsightly seepages in some places and broken windowpanes. Built in 1880 and rebuilt in 1956, the structure is badly needs sprucing up.

Accompanied by dividional railway manager M.K. Akhauri, senior divisional commercial manager Abhishek Kumar and other senior railway officials, Mishra reached the unreserved ticket booking complex and ordered special arrangements be made to make the process easier for physically challenged passengers.

He also wanted the complex, comprising 12 booking counters, be made more airy by increasing ventilators and ceiling fans, install barricading between counters and raise the number of electronic display boards .

He added a new escalator would soon be set up at platform 1 and existing ones on platforms 2 and 3 regularly operated. CCTV cameras should be set up near escalator switches, he said, so that passenger movement is monitored.

During his visit to the south extension complex, Mishra asked for better illumination with more floodlights, a boundary wall to protect the open spaces and better maintenance of sheds.

During the 90-minute inspection, Mishra promised to increase coaches in Maurya Express from existing 14 to 24.

After review meetings, he left for Koderma in the afternoon.
