Ranchi, April 29: Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) has proposed to set up an engineering college in the state in this fiscal in association with the DAV group.
SAIL is in the process of reviving a closed government ITI at Gua with support from the state government. It also conducted soccer contest in West Singhbhum and selected four tribal boys for final trials for induction into its Football Academy at Bokaro.
For the PSUs based in the state, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is no longer restricted to organising health camps or constructing roads. Like their private sector counterparts such as Tata Steel, these state-owned companies are now more eager to carve a niche in the community welfare services.
Mecon, SAIL and CCL have almost doubled their CSR budget in the present fiscal. While CCL and SAIL plan to pump in over Rs 50 crore for community services, Mecon would spend over Rs 20 lakh for strengthening its on-going activities.
For the first time, SAIL will have independent CSR offices at all six mining units and its Bokaro Steel Plant. SAIL has also appointed Ranchi-based Society for Rural Industrialisation to prepare a blueprint of what it should do for the community.
“There exists a strong perception that PSUs do not do much for the community. Hence we felt there is a need for more stress on welfare activities,” said PSU officials.
SAIL and CCL have planned to adopt more villages in all those areas where its mining activities are taking place.
Other activities include running of 11 community education centres and imparting vocational training for poor students.
