The 26th Annual Flower Show-cum-Horticulture Exhibition in Jamshedpur sent out a strong green message when it displayed bonsai and vegetables as much as the colourful flowers.

Organised by the Horticultural Society of Jamshedpur, Tata Steel and Jusco for the second year at Gopal Maidan in Bistupur, the four-day show kicked off on Thursday.

“The flower show is an important event in Jamshedpur’s calender. Our founder JN Tata always had this vision that the city would boast wide roads with greenery on its sides. But, we have taken greenery for granted and do not do much to protect it. I hope more and more people will start taking interest in gardening and horticulture. The flower show has increased in its grandeur and hopefully we will have more such achievements in future too,” said T.V. Narendran, managing director of Tata Steel, who was the chief guest at the inauguration.

Chairperson of Horticultural Society of Jamshedpur Ruchi Narendran was also present at the ceremony and delivered the welcome speech.

This year, there is a special arena for the gardener trainees who were trained during different programmes organised by the Horticultural Society. Scientists from the horticulture department of Birsa Agriculture University, Ranchi, will conduct technical sessions in the morning.

The flower show has about 178 displays this year of which 30 are nurseries and 19 kiosks exhibit agricultural tools, seeds, fertilisers, pesticides and bio-fertilisers.

“We are happy to say that this time there are nurseries from Darjeeling and Bangalore,” said Ruchi Narendran.

Eighty-five displays — divided into two broad categories of institutional and amateur — compete in various categories like potted seasonal flowers, perennial flowers, potted fruits and vegetables, potted foliage plants, cacti and succulents, bonsai, cut flowers, bouquets, medicinal and aromatical plants.

Of the 85, institutional participants are 22 while the rest 63 fall under the amateur category.

The panel of nine judges from Calcutta, Howrah, Rourkela, Kharagpur, Ranchi was felicitated by Narendran during the inaugural ceremony.
