Planning a start-up that involves metals? You can now seek help from the National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML) in Jamshedpur.

The NML, so long focused on R&D in metals, materials and minerals, has decided to mentor entrepreneurs. It has registered CSIR-NML Technology Business Innovation Centre (TBIC) as a nonprofit that organised its first workshop in the city on Friday.

The inaugural session was attended by former faculty member of XLRI Prabal K. Sen, Tata Steel's head of IP cell Munish Sudan and head of research planning and business development of NML Amitava Mitra.

The programme was part of CSIR's platinum jubilee celebrations organised concurrently with CSIR Capsule Exhibition, a national exposition of its contribution to nation building, being held from September 21 to 23.

Starting from research planning and business development, the TBIC shall move ahead in supporting entrepreneurs in incubation and mentoring. Marketing and funding opportunities will be explored later as the centre grows.

'Being an entrepreneur is like being in a war. You need innovation and that fire to keep you going in spite of all problems and failures. Risk-bearing is also one of the key qualities,' Sen said to motivate the audience.

City-based entrepreneurs like Doman Tudu, who's working on jewellery made from waste, and owner of tea parlour Avinash Dugar spoke on the importance of metals in their respective businesses.
