Jamshedpur yet again woke up to a suicide on Tuesday, this time the 25-year-old daughter of a transporter choosing the noose in Mango.

Rita Singh used her mother's sari to hang herself from an iron bar at the staircase of her residence in Sidhu-Kanhu Nagar, along NH-33, in Ulidih thana area around 1am.

Police suspect Rita took the extreme step because of a failed love affair.

A relative, Govind Singh, said Rita's father Anil Singh found her hanging at the staircase. "Around 4am, Anil woke up to relieve himself when she found the door of Rita's room ajar. He peeped inside but saw her bed to be empty. He started looking for her in the house and found her hanging from the iron bar at the staircase," said Govind, Anil's brother-in-law who resides in Ranchi.

Rita was taken to MGM Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. Hospital authorities informed police, who sent the body to MGM Medical College for post-mortem.

Assistant sub-inspector of police, Ulidih thana, Haradhan Hembram said the deceased left behind no suicide note. "After speaking to her family members, we suspect that Rita was spurned in love due to which she killed herself," the police officer said, but could not say with whom the deceased had an affair.

Rita was Anil's younger daughter. The transporter has two sons and an elder daughter, Sita, who is married and stays at her in-laws' residence in Ranchi.

A distraught Anil rued that they couldn't read Rita's mind.

"She was a graduate and had attained marriageable age. We were looking for a groom for her, but she killed herself without giving us a chance to understand her mind. My daughter was very jolly, but she looked depressed over the past one month or so. But we never found out the reason," he said.

On Monday morning, a 24-year-old divorced woman, Sunita Munda, tried to commit suicide by setting herself ablaze at Birsanagar.

Sunita, who sustained 80 per cent burns, is still struggling for her life at MGM hospital.
