What's aam jhora in Bihar is aam pora in Bengal and aam panna in many other parts of the country, but call a roasted mango drink by any other name, and it is equally tasty and healthy.

The 1,400-odd inmates at Ghaghidih Central Jail, on Jamshedpur outskirts, will vouch for that. With day temperatures rocketing to 44.8°C on Sunday, the central jail's administration has added aam jhora to the menu of prison inmates.

The drink made from the pulp of roasted raw mango, with a bit of sugar and salt, is famed for heat-resistant properties. At many homes, hostesses serve it in tall glasses with lashings of aromatic crushed cumin and ice cubes aplenty, straws and tiny umbrellas adding to the visual appeal.

At Ghaghidih jail, inmates won't get frills. But, what they will is a lifesaver against sunstroke. Jailer Satyendra Kumar Choudhary said though the health drink was not in the jail manual, he arranged it to save inmates from falling ill.

He is right. "On Saturday, a 27-year-old undertrial was brought here with acute stomach disorder due to heat," said a doctor on emergency duty at MGM hospital.

Jailer Choudhary said inmates in some Bihar jails get air coolers to beat the heat but there is no such provision at Ghaghidih.

"Air coolers are a big thing for which we need special permission from inspector general, prisons. But providing aam jhora was possible from my end. I did not have to ask for extra funds from the home department," he said. "It was a nice surprise for inmates today (Sunday). We will serve the mango drink to inmates on all days when the temperature soars up like it did on Sunday."
