Ranchi, May 24: If you want to pick up some tech lessons on library management, here’s your chance.

Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, will organise a workshop on automated and integrated library system on June 4-5. Open to all, the workshop will teach the participants how to equip their libraries with Koha software system.

“The event will greatly benefit library professionals, academic libraries, public libraries, special libraries and government libraries,” said workshop coordinator at BIT, Mesra, Vijayakumar M.

The workshop, he added, would cover installation of Koha on Windows, customisation and configuration of Koha software, demonstration of all modules like acquisition, cataloguing, serial control, circulation and the like.

Parthasarathi Mukhopadhyay, an expert on Koha software from Burdwan University, has been roped in as the resource person to conduct the workshop.

“Over 60 professionals, including participants from other states, have already registered for the workshop. The registration fee is Rs 500,” said Tanushree Bhatnagar, the information officer of BIT, Mesra.

Koha is an integrated library system created in 1999 by Katipo Communications for the use of Horowhenua Library Trust, New Zealand.

The Central Library of BIT, Mesra, automated itself with the Koha software in 2004.

But no other library of the state capital, including Central Library of Ranchi University, has this facility. Cataloguing, serial control, issuing of books et al are done manually — a Herculean task.

In this regard, the BIT, Mesra, workshop will provide a unique opportunity to the library professionals and aspiring librarians to upgrade their technical knowledge.

The workshop will also include practical sessions during which participants will learn about the software and how to install it in their libraries themselves.
