What made you open a retail outlet like Bargain Bazar in Ranchi, where people are not much into shopping?
I was experienced in the field as I started my career as a retailer when I was 13 years old. I knew Ranchi had a lot to offer for serious retailers. When Jharkhand was formed, I found myself in some trouble because of the ensuing political disturbances. In undivided Bihar, there were limited number people to oblige. And shopping is catching on with the citizens and Bargain Bazar records a foot-fall of more than 2,000 people everyday and a turnover of Rs 4 crore a year.
What are your concerns as a businessman in the state capital?
The law and order situation prevailing in Ranchi leaves a lot to be desired. I vividly remember the 1994 evening when I was shot near Upper Bazaar by robbers, who managed to flee with my hard-earned Rs 3.5 lakh. People must feel safe for business to thrive in any city.
What does a customer expect from a retailer?
Customers, these days, do not like bargaining and they also want every item under one roof. They look for quality at reasonable costs and desire a peaceful atmosphere while shopping.
What are your suggestions for budding businessmen?
A businessman must be prepared for crisis situations and face the adversities with determination and grit. One must also be prepared to accept challenges to be successful as a businessman. As risks involved in business are high, every step has to be calculated and planned for.
Does one?s family play a role in his career as a businessman?
It plays a vital role. My grandfather, in a way, is responsible for my success as it was his goodwill that made people help me when I started out as a retailer. His good work and reputation also allowed me to start my business with a capital of only Rs 1.25 lakh.
