Ranchi, Aug. 27: Mahamana Malaviya Mission (MMM), which was officially launched in Ranchi in November 2015, is finally ready to make a start.

Founded in Delhi in 1974 by a group of Banaras Hindu Unversity (BHU) students, MMM strives to propagate freedom fighter Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya's values and ideals through service projects, educational programmes and activities that strengthen the moral fibre of society.

MMM general secretary Birendra Singh said although the Ranchi chapter was launched two years ago, it started making its presence felt only recently through various development activities. "Following Malaviya's footsteps, the mission is committed to working for betterment of weaker section of society," he said.

Akhilesh Kumar Singh, an alumnus of BHU and chief manager (geology) of CMPDIL, said over 100 ex-BHU students who stay in Ranchi will be teamed up for constructive work.

Yesterday, the mission had organised a seminar on social harmony and cleanliness at the Koel auditorium of CMPDIL, Kanke, where dignitaries such as state election commissioner N.N. Pandey, former director of Sri Krishna Institute of Public Administration A.K. Pandey and former general manager of Mecon K.V.P. Singh shared the dais with kshetriya pracharak of RSS (Bihar and Jharkhand) Ramdutta Chakradhar. "We want to work in the field of education. After yesterdays' programme, we have planned to take it a step further," MMM general secretary Singh said.

Speaking at the seminar, RSS functionary Chakradhar recalled Malviya's role in the freedom struggle. "When 177 freedom fighters were convicted to be hanged in the Chouri-Choura case in 1922, he pleaded their case in Allahabad High court and got 156 acquitted. Malaviya was also the first from the upper caste to have food with lower caste leader Jagjeevan Ram despite opposition by BHU students," Chakradhar said.
