GOGIA SARKAR MAGICIAN Published 09.01.06, 12:00 AM

How will you describe yourself?

I am an artist far away from superstitions and hypocrisy. I believe in science and miracles of yoga. But most importantly, I am just an ordinary man. I was highly influenced by magicians P.C. Sarkar (senior) and Gogia Pasha and hence changed my name to Gogia Sarkar.

What is magic all about?

Magic is completely an art. It has no connection with supernatural powers or totem, thus people should not mistake magic with other things like supernatural powers. The shows are performed just to baffle the audience so that they think that the magician has done all the things by himself.

How did the idea of becoming a magician come to your mind?

My story is different from other people, who take up a profession after getting inspired by role models. I got inspired after I joined the profession. I was fascinated by people who laughed with me after my acts and performances.

What preparations do you take before a show?

Well, before a show we have to do everything by ourselves. From our make up, costumes, to the arrangements, we take care of all the nitty-gritty to make the show a success. Hence, to make the audience feel that everything is natural, proper ambience is created. They feel as if they are in a different world.

What do you predict about the future of the magic industry?

Although the paths and ways to entertainment are manifold, people are still fascinated about magic and magic shows. The government should also play a role by recognising this art as a entertainment sector and provide aid to able magicians. It would encourage magicians to perform better and help magic reach greater heights of success.
