Literary meet focus on Tagore

Jamshedpur, Dec. 24: Participants in the 77th All-India Nikhil Bharat Banga Sahitya Sammelan would discuss literary works of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore and relevance in the modern day when they sit across the table at a literary session from tomorrow.

Eminent Bengali scholars, including professor of Southeast Asian countries language of Chicago University, Clinton Silly, head of Bengali department of Dhaka University, professor Anisurazaman, former vice-chancellor of Ranchi University Ram Dayal Munda and head of Bengali department of North Bengal University Ananda Gopal Ghosh will be part of the deliberations.

The conference is being held after a gap of 24 years. The last conference was held in 1980.

This year, the conference, which is held at Tagore Society, assumes significance as the city is also celebrating the birth centenary of JRD Tata.

Founded in 1922, the Nikhil Bharat Banga Sahitya Sammelan is one of the oldest literary organisations in the country devoted to enrichment and propagation of Bengali language and literature and to make a bridge with other Indian languages and literature.

It has more than 100 branches across the country. The organisers said the four -day event would kick off tomorrow with the general body meeting of the sammelan.

The members will elect a new president of the sammelan at the meeting. Former Union communications minister Tapan Sikdar is the present president of the sammelan.

Although the sammelan will begin from December 25, it would be formally inaugurated by Union defence minister Pranab Mukherjee on December 26.

Chief minister Arjun Munda, noted music critic Sudhir Chakraborty and Tata Steel managing director B Muthuraman, who is the patron-in-chief of the sammelan, will also be present at the inaugural function.

Over 1,800 delegates from across the country and abroad would participate in the conference and deliberate on a wide range of subjects related to Bengali language, art and culture.

The theme of the conference is ?Tagore in everyday life.?

The attraction of the meet would be the sessions on film and drama which will be conducted by Samik Bandopadhyay, writer and noted film critic, Gautam Ghosh and Tarun Majumdar, prominent film directors.
