Jamshedpur, July 9: Kolhan University will strengthen the National Service Scheme (NSS) in constituent colleges from this academic year.

Kolhan University vice-chancellor Salil Kumar Roy, along with his counterparts from other universities in Jharkhand, met deputy chief minister Sudesh Mahto in Ranchi today to discuss NSS activities in universities and colleges and how to make them more effective.

NSS operates under the Union ministry of youth affairs and sports. Its aim is to get students to serve the community while studying in an educational institution; to arouse social conscience among students; to provide them with opportunity to work creatively and constructively with the community around the educational campus; and to put the education they receive to concrete social use.

“The meeting with the deputy chief minister emphasised on strengthening NSS in colleges. Thus we have decided to take out new ways of streamlining the existing volunteers and getting new memberships,” said Roy.

There are 3,722 NSS volunteers in 13 affiliated and constituent colleges of Kolhan University, which needs to be increased to 6,000 in the coming academic year. The objective is to increase the number and make them associated with various social organisations where social and community services can be a regular feature. Although many colleges here have NSS, they are hardly active and operational. Roy said the university would tie up with Red Cross for blood donation camps and the forest department for tree plantation drives.

The activity forum of NSS comprises national integration camps, blood donation camps, shramdaan, plantation, immunisation, disaster management and adventure programmes. However, Kolhan University has listed its yearlong agenda and that includes literacy campaigns, health awareness, medical camps, cleaning of campuses etc.

“The NSS in this belt has not been so active. We had 10 college level programme co-ordinators who attended a NSS training camp in Narendrapur. The rest would attend the camp from July 15. Colleges have also received Rs 45,000 each for conducting various activities under NSS,” said D.N. Mahto, proctor and NSS co-ordinator of Kolhan.
