The court of the judicial commissioner on Tuesday framed charges against Bijendra Prasad alias Golu (24), who decapitated his girlfriend Khushboo Shahdeo (19) on the St Xavier’s College campus in Ranchi on April 27.
At 2.50pm, the court framed the charges with the accused and his lawyer Nityanand Sinha in attendance. However, neither Bijendra’s parents nor the Shahdeos attended the proceedings.
While framing the charges, the court asked Bijendra whether he admitted his crime. The accused answered in the negative, parroting: “Maine khoon nahin kiya hai, maine khoon nahin kiya hai (I have not committed murder. I have not committed murder).” The accused was an engineering student in Jamshedpur when the crime was committed.
Before charges were framed, Sinha pleaded before the court that his client was mentally unsound, upon which judicial commissioner A.V. Singh made Sinha aware of a RINPAS report that said the accused was mentally fit.
Earlier, Bijendra reached the court in black jeans, cream T-shirt and brown slippers, from Birsa Munda Central Jail in a special vehicle. As many as five security personnel accompanied him.
Bijendra, who on April 28 had openly expressed his repentance for killing Khusboo, and had also said he would not engage a lawyer to protect himself, preferred to remain tightlipped on Tuesday.
He also did not want to be photographed. When someone tried to take his picture, he pounced on the photographer, trying to snatch away the camera with one hand, with the other being in handcuffs.
After the charges were framed, the court fixed three consecutive dates starting December 1 for examination of witnesses in the case.
It was around 5pm on April 27 when Bijendra decapitated his the girl he loved with a khukri as she came down the stairs after appearing for her economics examination conducted by Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) for intermediate students.
An FIR was registered in this connection at Lower Bazar police station.
Earlier, the police had filed the chargesheet in the court of chief judicial magistrate on May 20, stating that Bijendra Prasad alias Golu, had an affair with the deceased, but Khusboo’s imminent made him see red.
The chargesheet nailed Bijendra as the killer primarily relying on the statements of Khusboo’s grandmother Basanti Devi and St Xavier’s guard Mahavir Kachchap.
