Do you play Teri deewani or Allah ke bande over and over in a loop? Well, famed singer Kailash Kher may soon sing the jingle for Jharkhand tourism.

State tourism department, recently put in a spot by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report that pointed out financial irregularities of its wing Jharkhand Tourism Development Corporation, is trying to focus on the positives.

Planning an aggressive publicity drive for Jharkhand as a preferred tourist destination, the state tourism wants to hire Kher as the voice of its brand. A source in the department maintained the singer had verbally agreed about a month and a half ago, but the file for hiring him was awaiting cabinet nod.

Tourism director Suchitra Sinha said they wanted to rope in Kher, subject to government approval.

"His earthy style of singing suits Jharkhand's context. He sings in the Sufiana style but is equally adept at folk numbers. In the past, he has also sung for Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan tourism," Sinha reasoned.

"Kher's association with Jharkhand tourism will boost our branding. Promotion is an integral part of our new tourism policy. Unlike the past, our department is focusing on visibility, publicity and improvement of basic amenities. This proposed jingle is to get the national and global audience to tune in," she said.

Locally, too, the tourism department is coming up with good ideas. It recently created a few jingles in Nagpuri, Mundari and other ethnic languages for its big-ticket participation at travel and tourism fairs in New Delhi in January and February.

Aired on FM channels in Delhi, the jingles were liked by many Delhiites, according to a tourism official, who gave the details of the recent fairs the department had taken part in.

"In the last two months, the state participated in at least half a dozen prominent fairs, Bharat Parv at Red Fort and 23rd South Asia Travel and Tourism Exchange (both in Delhi) in January and India Travel Mart 2016 (Chandigarh), Travel & Trade Fair (Delhi), India International Travel Exhibition (Vijaywada) in February," the official said.

"At the South Asia Travel and Tourism Exchange, defence minister Manohar Parrikar liked the Jharkhand Thali," he added.

The department has also worked out a special tag line for Jharkhand tourism on the lines of those used by other states. "It's Aawa hamar gaon, which is in Nagpuri language," state tourism director Sinha said. "If Rajasthan has Padharo maaro des, Kerala has God's own country, we also have ours."

On CAG's observation against JTDC, a tourism official said: "It's time to look forward. We are working with a two-pronged approach, publicity and upgrading of basic infrastructure at tourist spots, to give Jharkhand tourism an overhaul."
