Criminal caught, kidnap bid foiled

Hazaribagh: Hazaribagh police foiled plans of dreaded criminal Shankar Rawani to abduct a prominent city doctor and a Koderma-based businessman by arresting the gangster on Wednesday.

Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested Rawani and two of his associates after a brief encounter. The superintendent of police, Praveen Kumar Singh, said a team comprising officers-in-charge of Barhi, Ichaak and Barkatha was dispatched to the Simeria forests of Barkatha in the Barhi sub-division. He said 10 criminals, including Rawani, were engaged in planning, when the police team chased them, resulting in an exchange of fire from both sides.

Singh said seven of them managed to flee but Rawani and two of his associates, Mohammad Istiyak and Deepu Paswan, were arrested. The police also recovered a revolver, two live cartridges and three bikes from the spot.

Singh informed that Rawani?s gang was active in Hazaribagh, Koderma, Giridih and Dhanbad districts. According to him, the group was involved in road robberies, bank loots, murders and abductions.

He added that during interrogation, the trio revealed they were planning to abduct a doctor from Hazaribagh and a businessman from Koderma before Holi.

DC under fire

Hazaribagh: Deputy commissioner Rahul Purwar on Wednesday came under fire from the secretary of Red Cross Society, Navendu Shankar, for ?high-handedness? in his dealings related to the medical body.

Navendu told media persons that Purwar had violated by-laws of the Red Cross Society and had undermined his position as the secretary several times in the past. He added that Purwar had never cared to take his consent on any issue related to the society.

Man shot at

Giridih: Thirty-year-old Bhim Sao was shot four times by three men, when he was going out for his morning walk around five in the morning, at Maheshlundi area, under Mufassil police station. Sources said the firing was over the issue of control of illegal mining in the area. Bhim, a local strongman, received bullets in his face, rib and back but managed to reach home. From there he was referred to PMCH, Dhanbad. But he neither revealed the names of the attackers nor gave any statement before the police. He has only said he will deal with the attackers himself.

Eviction drive

Giridih: The district police have started a drive to remove encroachment from Kalibari to Court Road on Wednesday. The anti-encroachment drive was led by sergeant Anil Kumar, who also seized motorbikes without any number plates. The police also seized several vehicles that had the national emblem painted on their number plates.

Woman?s Day

Giridih: World Vision, a non-government organisation, held a function on the occasion of International Women?s Day at Carmel School. On the occasion several dignitaries spoke on issues related to women and students performed a cultural programme. Chief guest, district and sessions judge, D.N. Upadhayay said: ?There should not be a few days to talk on women?s issues, but steps should be taken to implement the talks and plans everyday. Women are one of the important creations of god and should be respected by both men and by women themselves.?

NH-33 project

Ranchi: The minister of road, transport and highways, informed through a news release that Barahi-Hazaribagh-Ranchi-Jamshedpur section of National Highway 33, has been identified for the construction of four lanes, on built, operate and transfer basis, under the National Highway Development Project.

Preparation of detailed project report for four-laning of Barahi-Hazaribagh- Ranchi section has been completed. There will also be a four-laning of Jamshedpur-Baharagoda, which is not part of NHDP and will depend on the availability of funds.

Mata Amritanandamayee Seva Samiti, Ranchi, distributed 27 spectacles among tribals from 11 villages of Lali in Namkum block. Pradeep Modi of Bhimraj Modi Dharmashala Trust Board, donated these spectacles.
