Jaipal Singh’s widow dies
Ranchi: Jahanara Jaipal Singh, widow of Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh, passed away on Wednesday at 11.30 pm at All India Institute of Medical Science in Delhi.
Jahanara was born on May 31, 1923. She was educated in the Cheltenham Ladies College in England. Jahanara was elected a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1958 and remained in office till 1970. She was also a deputy minister during the Indira Gandhi regime. She was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha for a third time in 1972. She was a member of the board of Punjab and Sind Bank at the time of her death.
HC ruling on Bachcha petition
Ranchi: Jharkhand High Court on Thursday directed the government to submit case diaries prepared by the CID and the police in the Sakaldeo Singh murder case. The directive was issued during the hearing of the writ filed by urban development minister Bachcha Singh. Singh had challenged that the police department had no right to file a chargesheet against him when the case is being investigated by the CID.
The court also adjourned the hearing of the Tata land lease renewal case for six weeks.
Train kills elephant
Ranchi: A pregnant elephant of the Palamau tiger project area was killed by the down Intercity Express (Varanasi-Ranchi) on Jawa river bridge in Latehar district on Wednesday.
Train services were affected for five hours on the Barkakana-Garhwa section under Dhanbad rail division. The engine of train was also damaged in the accident and another engine had to brought in to replace it. In September last year, four elephants were killed at the same place.
New surgery ward
Ranchi: Governor Ved Prakash Marwah inaugurated a new surgery ward at the Radha Rani Leprosy Eradication and Rehabilitation Centre here on Thursday.
Marwah was accompanied by Cardinal Telesphore P. Toppo and superior-general of the Missionaries of Charity Sister Nirmala. “This institution has come forward to help people shunned by the society. Leprosy patients have to be treated with a lot of care and compassion. The disease is not what it used to be earlier and is completely curable if detected at an early stage,” Marwah said.
Alumni meet
Ranchi: The rural management department of the Xavier Institute of Social Service will organise its alumni meet on February 21.
Students of the department have organised the meet to focus on the challenges faced by and opportunities available to students of rural management. A special question and answer session will also be organised for students of the current batch to interact with their seniors.
Mother tongue
Jamshedpur: Amra Bangali, a socio-economic-political organisation, will bring out a procession and hold a mass meeting at Sakchi Aambagan Maidan in Jamshedpur to celebrate international Mother Tongue Day on February 21.
According to Angad Mahato, secretary of Amra Bangali, the organisation respects every language as it believes that all languages are part of the universal sound Omkar, the shabda Brahma.
More girls’ schools
Jamshedpur: The Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee (JPCC) has drawn the attention of the secondary education director towards the need to open more schools for girls in East Singhbhum district.
JPCC secretary S.R.A. Rizvi Chabban said though the government seems serious in developing education facilities for girls, it is not making any positive efforts in the direction. Chabban added that a JPCC survey found that there are very few schools for girls in Potka, Bahragora, Musaboni, Jamshedpur, Patamda, Dumaria, Dalbhumgarh and Chakulia.
Foundry college fest
Ranchi: A one-act play, solo singing competition, collage making and rangoli competition marked the begining of Jinks-2004, the youth festival organised by the National Institute of Foundary and Forge Technology (NIFFT) here on Thursday.
The plays were laced with satire on society and the education system ofthe country. More than 25 colleges, like XISS, Doranda College, BIT-Mesra, St Xaviers, and Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, Jamshedpur, took part in the event.
