Dhanbad, June 5: BJP legislator Sanjeev Singh of Jharia was elected as the general secretary while veteran leader Girinath Singh as the president of Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), one of the five government-recognised central trade unions, in Dhanbad today.
More than 900 delegates of 29 small unions, including Janata Mazdoor Sangh (Kunti faction), all affiliated to Hind Mazdoor Sabha, arrived in the district from across the country to take part in the elections held at New Town Hall.
Sanjeev, son of former Jharia MLAs Kunti Singh and Suryadeo Singh who was the founder, had put in all efforts to make the state executive committee meeting of Hind Mazdoor Sabha successful.
"I will work for all the outstanding issues, including the demand for minimum wages, facing labourers," Sanjeev told the media on the sidelines of the meeting.
On the other hand, Sanjeev's cousins - former Dhanbad deputy mayor Niraj Singh and his brother incumbent deputy mayor Eklavya Singh - organised the elections and executive committee meeting of another HMS faction at Nehru Complex of Koylanagar.
Former state minister Bachcha Singh, younger brother of Suryadeo Singh and uncle of Sanjeev, was re-elected as the president. General secretary of Bihar Janata Khan Mazdoor Sangh Ranvijay Singh, son of late trade union leader Sakaldeo Singh, was elected as the general secretary while Niraj was elected as one of the secretaries of the Bachcha Singh faction.
Bachcha Singh's relationship with his sister-in-law Kunti soured when she contested and won the Jharia seat on a BJP ticket in 2005. Kunti, who was re-elected in 2009, later passed on the baton to son Sanjeev in 2014, who defeated Congress candidate and cousin Niraj by a margin of 33,692 votes.
