Ho, one of the most important indigenous scripts of Jharkhand, will make a global mark in April at the International Festival of Films on Tribal Art and Culture (IFFTAC), in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

The nine-minute documentary, aptly titled Magical Script, made by city-based employee of Jusco corporate sustainability department Subhashish Chakraborty, has been selected at the global festival between April 18 and 23, from among 300 films and 20 countries.

The film fest is organised jointly by Vanya (an enterprise of the department of tribal affairs, government of Madhya Pradesh) and Madhya Pradesh Arts Communications and Entertainment.

Chakraborty (34), said he was so impressed by the Ho script, that it compelled him to turn a film-maker. He told The Telegraph he had sent his application to IFFTAC last September. “When the confirmation of selection of my film came on Sunday, I was incredibly happy,” Chakraborty said.

Magical Script is a fruition of one year of research to trace the origin of Warang Kshiti — the script of Ho — says the film-maker. The documentary is also a tribute to Loko Bodra, credited with finding the Warang Kshiti script. It was primarily shot in Ho-dominated villages of Pandadih in Silli, near Ranchi and Jorapokhar in West Singhbhum’s Jhinkpani block.

It shows the richness of the Ho script and how ignorance is killing it. “This is an amazing pictographic script with a logical connection between symbol and sound. It must be preserved,” Chakraborty said.
