Dhanbad: Governor Droupadi Murmu has stressed on the need to use modern technology for safer and environment-friendly mining in the state.
Addressing the All India Seminar on Technological Advancements and Emerging Mining Methods here on Friday, Murmu emphasised on the urgent need for dissemination of knowledge about emerging mining methods among stakeholders for the progress of the mining industry.
The two-day seminar, being attended by 200 delegates from different mining companies and engineering and research institutes from across the country, was organised by the Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR) in association with the Dhanbad chapter of Institution of Engineers.
"The mining sector is very important for the industrial development of the country. Since Independence, this sector has witnessed tremendous development in terms of quality and quantity," Murmu said.
"Mining practices has also caused damage to the environment and displaced people living in and around the mines. These factors prompted the mi-ning firms and the state government to begin environment fri-endly mining," she said, adding that Jharkhand had taken a host of measures for carrying out sustainable mining.
"We need to be sensitive towards environmental aspects of mining and the need of the hour is to produce clean energy," said Murmu.
Northern Coalfields (NCL) CMD P.K. Sinha, who was pr-esent at the seminar as the guest of honour, emphasised the need for clean coal technology.
CIMFR director Pradeep Kumar Singh said altogether 44 technical papers would be presented during the seminar.
He said CIMFR had emerged as the highest-funded institute among all the 38 institutes of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research spread across the country. He added that the institute was also the knowledge partner for the ongoing road projects of Border Roads Organisation.
The governor also inaugurated a sports complex and an administrative block of the institute.
"We are working with several institutes and universities. Recently, Binod Bihar Mahto Koylanchal University (BBMKU) signed a pact with us which will allow their students to use our laboratories for research," he added.
