Ranchi: The intelligence wing of the railways has arrested an unlicensed travel agent from the state capital for black marketing tatkal e-tickets.
Akshay Kumar (57), alias Amar Thakur, was detained from his residence at Kilburn Colony in Doranda on Wednesday afternoon following a tip-off. He was formally arrested late in the night and produced in court on Thursday morning.
Sources in the RPF said 19 e-tickets valued at Rs 29,005, around Rs 500 in cash, a desktop computer with accessories, a laptop, seven mobile phones and eight ATM cards were among items seized from Kumar's home that doubled up as a hovel for his illegal business.
"Two of his employees were also detained, but were released later for want of direct evidence," an RPF jawan said.
Intelligence officers said Kumar had generated 63 IDs to book tatkal tickets online that he later sold at a premium.
"Only licensed travel agents can generate more than one ID. They can charge a small commission per ticket. But Kumar, who did not have a permit, was creating fake IDs and selling the e-tickets for an extra Rs 300-500," an officer said.
Kumar has been booked under Section 143 of the Indian Railways Act. It is a non-bailable section that forbids unauthorised personnel from selling train tickets. The penalty is a jail term for three years or a fine of Rs 10,000 or both.
