It has been four years since Binay Kumar Mahto, a student of Class VIII at Sapphire International School in Hardag, was found murdered on the residential campus, but justice is still a far cry for the bereaved parents.
On Binay’s death anniversary on Wednesday, his parents, siblings and relatives remembered him with floral tributes at his residence in Argora in the heart of the city.
After taking part in a small puja at the house, Binay’s parents Manbahal Mahto and Kashila Devi and their two sons Vipul and Vivek vowed to ensure justice for him.
“After the murder of my son, the school’s Hindi teacher Nazia Hussain, her husband Arif Ali Ansari and their two juvenile children were arrested. The minor children were acquitted by Juvenile Justice Board and the teacher and her husband were granted bail. My son’s death is still shrouded in mystery. We still don’t know who killed him and why. I will leave no stone unturned to ensure justice for my innocent son,” Kashila Devi, a homemaker, told The Telegraph with tears in her eyes.
Manbahal said a public interest litigation (PIL) by a parents’ body demanding proper probe into the incident had not been heard after May 11, 2007.
“A criminal writ petition filed by me on March 8, 2018, for a better investigation remains unheard since July 26 last year. But I will not stop fighting till a proper probe is conducted and the court punishes the culprit,” Manbahal, a businessman, said.
The family also expressed their disappointment with the Raghubar Das government while pinning hope on the current regime.
“When I met then chief minister Raghubar Das and DGP D.K. Pandey, they suggested me to watch the movie Drishyam, indicating that my 12-year old son was killed for having an affair with the daughter of the teachers who were arrested in this connection. Now I realise that it was nothing more than an attempt to divert the investigation. Now I have hope from this government. A few days back, I had met chief minister Hamant Soren, who had raised the issue in the Assembly when he was in the Opposition,” Mahto said.
Binay was found lying in a pool of blood outside the teacher’s hostel on the school campus around 1.30am on February 5, 2016.
He was first taken to Gurunanak Hospital and then RIMS, where doctors declared him brought dead.
So far, 14 persons have been made accused in the case.
However, none of the accused is behind the bars so far though the parents are running from pillar to post for justice.
