Jamshedpur, April 9: Keeping the dwindling forest resources of Dalma in mind, the wildlife sanctuary authorities have decided to take measures to prevent further loss.

Named Dalma Bachao Andolan, the new move aims at making people aware of the dangers of depleting forest resources and the diminishing wildlife. Targeting close to 400 villages around the Dalma range, a number of groups have been formed by the sanctuary officials who are currently visiting five villages each day to spread awareness about the importance of conservation of the natural forest cover.

“On any given day, the different groups visit villages and inform them about the loss resulting from the indiscriminate felling of trees,” said Sushil Oraon, the range officer of Dalma.

Officials also resort to nukkar nataks and road shows to spread awareness. Several clusters comprising local people have been formed who are entrusted with the responsibilities of making the villagers aware of their natural surroundings.

“They also convince the villagers to abstain from indiscriminate killing of animals,” said Oraon.

“We are sure that the awareness campaign will go a long way in educating people to bring down human interference to a minimum, particularly during Vishu Shikar festival when villagers come hunting for animals to the forest,” said a senior forest official.
