If chlorine is consumed in excess of the permissible limit over a long period, then it is harmful. One should regularly test to check that only 0.2 milligram of 'free' chlorine is mixed per litre of water.

How is the water purified by modern appliances using infrared rays?

It is good if one follows the specifications. If flow of water is increased, infrared rays and other purifying elements do not get adequate time to kill impurities.

What precautions should one take with water from unknown sources?

If you notice something wrong with the water — dirt, colour or smell — do not drink it. Also, water should by boiled for five minutes before consumption.

What do you think of water from deep borewells?

Water from deep borewells is quite safe, but it may contain larger quantities of iron. Studies have revealed that ground-water procured from certain pockets in Ranchi has more iron whereas water from other ares have larger quantities of fluoride. Iron is less harmful than fluoride, hence there is need for proper and systematic analysis of ground-water.
