Patna, May 31: Janata Dal-United candidate Om Prakash Yadav may have lost the Siwan seat to Mohammad Shahabuddin, but the party now appears to be bracing itself for a protracted legal war against the don’s alleged reign of terror.
Yadav today alleged that Shahabuddin’s goons were terrorising his party supporters through intimidation, kidnap and murder, which if not checked at once, “would lead to serious communal tensions in the district”.
State JD-U president Vijendra Prasad Yadav, along with Yadav, today said at a news conference: “The social tension arising from the terror tactics ‘to teach a lesson to those who dared to oppose Shahabuddin in the election’ will lead to communal tensions in the district, if not stopped at once.” Yadav today met the state director-general of police and submitted a memorandum to this effect. It described Shahabuddin’s attempts to terrorise his opponents before and after the election.
“Angry at our peaceful opposition to all his undemocratic and criminal actions, he had resorted to intimidating me and my supporters and threatening us to withdraw from contesting,” he alleged.
Yadav also alleged that Shahabuddin’s supporters created trouble even on the repolling day. The goons allegedly threatened Yadav’s supporters that they would teach the latter a lesson after the election.
Shahabuddin’s men were alleged to have attempted a “murderous attack” on Yadav and his supporters soon after the counting on May 26. Yadav filed a criminal case against Shahabuddin and his men, but the accused persons were said to be roaming free and creating further terror.
The complaint also mentioned the murder of JD-U supporter Yogendra Sah a couple of days ago for opposing rigging by Shahabuddin’s men.
The list included one more killing and at least half-a-dozen abductions, besides numerous physical assaults, looting and other similar acts.
Shahabuddin is still lodged in Siwan jail for a number of cases of murder and kidnap.
“The people of Siwan are a terrorised lot today. Our men are being targeted every day. People are forced to live in fear and tension,” the memorandum said.
The party president said the state police chief has assured to take prompt action after the Chhapra repolling was over.
The CPI-ML, which too had contested the Siwan seat, blamed Shahabuddin for terrorising the people of Siwan. “We have been opposing his terror tactics for many years and we will continue to take him on in every way we can,” said party leader K.D. Yadav.
However, sources in Patna said no administrative or police official would take action against Shahabuddin. “Siwan to uski muttee mein hain (Siwan is in his grip,” they said.
While the district administration refused to make any official statement, a police officer said: “We are aware of the allegations against Shahabuddin. But the police here cannot do much about it. We can only hope that law will take its own proper course in the long run.”
