They say some of the best things in campus life are free. For budding techies of Jharkhand's only state engineering college BIT-Sindri, it now includes a student app, Model Club.
As any BITian from Sindri knows, Model Club is one of the student societies of the college. And one of its members, third-year BTech computer science engineering student Ankit Avishek (20) has developed an app called Model Club, which gives a wealth of information on campus and careers after BTech.
Developed on Android, the app's beta version is running now. "But, we will go for a full-fledged launch on September 17, Vishwakarma Puja day. The app can be directly downloaded from Google Play Store free of cost," Ankit said.
From ragging relief, canteen queries and information on various student societies to contact numbers of wardens, mess in-charge, hostel superintendents, deans and director, to must-know fundamentals of the annual technical fest Sandhan, the app promises all.
Usefully, this is also an app that guides freshers about career options after completing BTech, including applying for Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering (GATE), Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).
For robotics freaks, there is more good news. As the main event of Sandhan, the annual fest of Model Club, is all about assembling robots, links of videos uploaded on YouTube by the students' club with tips on assembling robots and the availability of robot parts are also available on the app.
The app has links of guest lectures of experts such as former foreign secretary Muchkund Dubey who participated in this year's annual fest on March 3.
Ankit, also the public relations officer of Model Club, said the app was developed in 20 days. "We uploaded previous question papers and syllabi of GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, UPSC, among others. Many students face problems choosing the right career after BTech. We hope this app gives students at least a starting point," he said.
"The idea is to make something useful for middleclass boys with big dreams," said the Maithon boy, whose father Manoj Kumar is a central water commission employee, and mother Sujata Singh a homemaker.
BIT-Sindri electrical engineering professor R.P. Gupta, who's in-charge of Model Club, said he was convinced the app was a useful tool. "I particularly appreciate the updated know-how on TOEFL, GMAT, GRE, UPSC, etc," he said. "Many students who face uncertainty about career options would now follow a fixed target," he said.
BIT-Sindri's Model Club has many talents, including Rahul Kumar of BTech metallurgical engineering who recently developed an insect killer and repellent, and civil engineering student Alok Kumar who developed a glucose drip finishing alarm that is useful for hospitals and nursing homes.
