Jamshedpur, May 19: Nothing can stop ace mountaineer Premlata Agarwal.
After scaling Mt Aconcagua in February 2012, the 46-year-old mountain climber from Jamshedpur is gearing up to ascend Mt Mckinley — popularly known as Denali — the highest peak in North America with a summit elevation of 20,320 feet.
The mother of two daughters left New Delhi for Alaska today to join six other climbers from across the globe who are also eyeing the same peak. Union sports minister Ajay Maken flagged off Premlata’s next big challenge on Friday.
“I am all charged up for Mt Mckinley. I’m both mentally and physically fit,” the ace climber told The Telegraph before leaving for Alaska.
This trip will bring her closer to her dream of conquering the seven highest peaks of the world. She has scaled three — Mt Everest (29,029ft), Mt Kilimanjaro (19,334ft) and Mt Aconcagua (22,960ft) — so far.
She has also set the tentative dates for climbing the three other summits. She plans to scale Mt Elbrus in Europe between July 15 and 28, followed by Carstenze Pyramid in Indonesia between October 14 and 27. Premlata intends to finish her challenge by climbing Mt Vinson in Antartica between December 14 and 29.
The one who conquers all the seven summits is considered as a member of the “Hall of Fame” for mountaineers. Setting 2012 as her deadline, if Premlata achieves this feat, she will become the first Indian woman and one of the oldest women in the world to conquer all seven summits.
All these trips will be sponsored by Tata Steel. The firm will support her with a sponsorship of Rs 55 lakh to climb the remaining four summits.
Expressing her gratitude to Tata Steel, Premlata said: “My initiation into the field of adventure was by chance, and has been an uphill journey. I am looking forward to taste success by climbing all seven summits. I would like to thank Tata Steel and my mentor Bachendri Pal for their support.”
Her husband Vimal, a senior journalist, said the team would start climbing on May 20 and Premlata would return home next month. “The Everest success has boosted her confidence,” he added.
The ace climber has participated in several expeditions since 2004. She took part in Island Peak Expedition in Nepal in 2004 followed by the Karakoram Pass and Mt Stok Kangri in 2006. She also took part in the First Indian Women’s Thar Desert Expedition in 2007, a 40-day camel safari from Bhuj (Gujarat) to the Wagah Border.
