Jamshedpur, Aug. 25: The Plus-two classes of Navodaya Vidyalaya at Sijulata under Rajnagar police station have been suspended indefinitely since August 23.
The school authorities said they were forced to take the step following a “ruckus” created by six Plus-two students of the Nilgiri House.
The school authorities have also directed the boarders to vacate the hostel immediately. The parents of the boarders have been directed to take their wards home as soon as possible.
According to school sources, problem began when the house-master of Nilgiri House, Ravinder Ram, snatched away a camera being used by some students to click photographs of a cultural programme that was being hosted on the premises.
School authorities said the institution, directly monitored by the Centre, does not allow the use of camera by students.
The Plus-two students allegedly pelted stones at Ram and another associate teacher when their camera was confiscated. The teachers, however, escaped unhurt. News of the incident soon reached the authorities and they directed the immediate suspension of classes.
Classes remained suspended the next day, too, as the school authorities carried out an investigation to identify the students who were behind the incident.
On August 24, the school committee called an emergency meeting and the “culprits” were summoned. The committee then recorded the “confession statement” of the main accused.
This morning, trouble broke out again when some of the “guilty” students appeared at the assembly hall and demanded their camera back from Ram. When Ram refused to return the camera, the students once again created a ruckus.
Fearing another backlash from students, the school authorities have decided to send the Plus-two boys home.
School authorities said police have not been informed of the incident till now, but if the situation continues, then the police might have to be called in.
The school had been clouded by controversy last year when a student committed suicide due to the alleged “misbehaviour” by a teacher. The management did not specify when Plus-two classes would be resumed.
“The situation is tense on the campus. We are keeping an eye on the situation and would soon convene another meeting of the school committee. The guilty students had lobbed a brick at the teacher and he was lucky that it did not hit him,” said principal M.D. Mishra.
