Having lent his voice to the title tracks of Bodyguard, Khiladi 786 and Policegiri, Jamshedpur boy Rajdeep Chatterjee is now trying his hand at composing music.

The 22-year-old Loyola School alumnus and BBM student, who grabbed national attention with performances on reality shows such as Indian Idol 4 and Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar, uploaded a self-composed music video —Yun Toh — on YouTube.

The video, uploaded on July 20, has already garnered 831 hits and is likely to go viral over the next few weeks.

Speaking to The Telegraph over phone from Mumbai, Rajdeep said the decision to launch the video on YouTube was a promotional strategy.

“Nowadays, people hardly buy audio CDs and prefer downloading music. Moreover, YouTube is a great medium to promote one’s work and reach out to people all over the world,” he added.

Revealing more, Rajdeep said while he has composed the music of Yun Toh, Anurag Sharma, his cousin, penned the lyrics.

The video has been shot in Calcutta and its outskirts.

“I have been composing music for a long time but back in Jamshedpur, I could not record them because the city did not have a good studio. After five years in Mumbai, I and my cousin Anurag thought of giving it a shot and luckily the song turned out well,” he said.

Rajdeep claimed that his efforts had been applauded by many.

“I have received rave reviews for Yun Toh and I feel ecstatic. Ehsaan Noorani of Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy trio has appreciated the song. My friends abroad have found it romantic,” he said.

The budding music director added he had around 70 new compositions in his bank.

“I’ll release them one by one on virtual media,” he added.

On his playback singing career, Rajdeep said that Bollywood numbers apart, he had sung for Tamil and Telugu films.

“Right now, I am in Mumbai and am performing in stage shows. I’ve also signed a contract with HR Musik, owned by renowned composer Himesh Reshammiya,” he said, adding it was Reshammiya who helped him find a foothold in the music industry.

Rajdeep’s versatility springs from his training in Indian classical music. A sangeet prabhakar from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad, and a sangeet visharad from Gandharv Mahavidyalaya, he has also worked with noted composer Shantanu Moitra in MTV Coke Studio.

Rajdeep is one of Jamshedpur’s newest entrants to make a mark on Bollywood. Songstress Shilpa Rao, director Imtiaz Ali, actors R. Madhavan, Tanushree Dutta and Prayusha Banerjee have all gone on to achieve fame.
