Jamshedpur: Eight-year-old Krishna Saw of Dhanbad created a sensation by defeating his rival from Bokaro with a higher rank in the fourth round of the first Jamshedpur Chess Academy (JCA Open) championship at Agrasen Bhavan in Sakchi, Jamshedpur, on Sunday.

More than 200 children from Jharkhand and Bihar are taking part in the meet.

Krishna joined four others - Debanjan Sasmal (East Singbhum), Shaswata Pal (West Singhbhum), Prem Mundu and D.N. Mallick (both from Jamtara) - with 4 points from as many rounds.

Ankit Kumar, playing White, won a pawn on move 22 due to a hasty break on the Queen side by Krishna but blundered to lose his Queen after only a couple of moves.

Krishna converted his extra material to a full point after a marathon 88 move game. Top seed Debanjan Sasmal of Jamshedpur had to sweat it out to overcome a tough challenge from Milan Kumar of Seraikela Kharsawan with black pieces.

Another youngster, 12-year-old Shaswata Pal, handed out a shocking defeat to Amit Kumar Sharma of Dumka, who is higher rated. Amit playing black wasted couple of moves in the opening to handover the initiative to Shaswata. Shaswata broke open the King side and won a pawn on move 15. He won in 46 moves.
