Agitation over the death of medical school aspirant Ichchita Singh (20), found hanging in her hostel room, continued in Ranchi for the third consecutive day on Sunday with a roadblock and a candlelight vigil.
Around 50 students associated with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) blocked Circular Road near Hariom Tower, a coaching hub of the city under Lalpur police station area, demanding immediate arrest of those responsible for the Daltonganj girl's death in the capital.
"We have given a 48-hour deadline to arrest the people responsible for Ichchita's death. Else, we will launch a massive agitation. The incident has created a sense of fear among parents who have sent their daughters outside their hometowns to study. Such incidents can adversely affect education of women," said Atal Pandey, member of ABVP national executive and Ranchi University senate.
Lalpur thana OC Ramod Kumar Singh said the road was blocked for half an hour.
In the evening, the women's wing of JVM took out a candlelight march from Ranchi University to Albert Ekka Chowk. President of JVM women's wing Sobha Yadav said, "The matter should be thoroughly investigated. Police should check why Goal Institute did not inform them about the incident at Fighter Girls Hostel."
On why detentions or arrests had not taken place despite a murder FIR, city SP Kishore Kaushal said they were probing suicide, abetment and other angles too.
