Ranchi, April 2: Tribal leader N.E. Horo today said that the Jharkhand movement is not over with the formation of the state.
The people should continue to fight for their rights, he said, while releasing a book — The Jharkhand Movement: Indigenous People's Struggle for Autonomy in India at Xavier Institute of Social Service.
“The book has justifiably tried to highlight important aspects of the movement. More books need to be written on this topic. The book is a milestone in the history of Jharkhand movement,” he said.
Tribal scholars including the 21 writers, who had given their inputs to the book, were present.
Speaking on the occasion, Ranchi University teacher Ramesh Sharan said the origin of tribal movements can be traced back to the British regime which, in order to achieve its imperial motives, exploited them in many ways.
“The exploitation perpetrated by the British continues in independent India. No government has ever thought about the welfare of the tribals,” he said.
“There is no solution for this problem. All successive governments have been coming up with hollow promises,” he added.
Senior journalist Harivansh said praised the writers for the “thorough job”.He said the writers had taken into account different angles while giving their insight into the movement. The fact that write-ups have been written by those who actively took part in the Jharkhand movement makes the book exclusive, he said. Tribal scholar Ram Dayal Munda, who co-edited the book, also addressed the gathering .
