Father of the man

n While chief minister Arjun Munda, keeping one eye on next year?s polls, has been offering lollipops to several castes, a child refused the bounty when he was offered one. The crafty minister tried everything to get the child to accept a lollipop, but nothing helped. Finally, Munda had to thrust the lollipop into the child's mouth and force him to accept what was being offered. The occasion was inauguration ceremony of the ?Catch up? drive organised by the health department to for expectant mothers and infants.

Munda started with administering vitamin drops out of his hand to the child. This did not go well with the little one though, who, understandably taken aback, began to howl. The flabbergasted minister fished out a lollipop, but the kid promptly refused Munda?s advances.

The chief minister, like always, ultimately had his way, but unlike many communities, who heartily accepted the recommendations for tribal status as bounty, the child gave a piece of his mind to the honourable minister.

Down the hill?

How old is Sonia Gandhi? Congressmen, and women, who lit candles and sang out ?happy birthday? in front of cameras, had no idea how old their party chief is. Mahila Congress chief Pratibha Pandey made her self at home at the busy Main Road, lit candles and sang till she was hoarse. However, the tune failed her when someone asked, ?How old is Soniaji? Where was she born?? Pandey stammered and stuttered before coughing out that Soniaji ?must have been born somewhere in Italy, 57 years ago?.

With her mood and enthusiasm ruined by all the silly questioning about another ladies? age, Pandey chose to retreat and shun all company thereafter.

Royal touch

If a hot-shot coal industry executive?s behaviour in front of his Union minister is an indication, JMM chief Shibu Soren must be having a terrorising effect on people.

At a luncheon hosted in Ranchi recently, top Coal India executives were seen scampering to offer delicacies to Soren, falling all over to have him eat out of their hands. After months in jail and wilderness, Soren only seemed to be enjoying the royal treatment.

Fiery faculty

Barely 48 hours after the incident, where teachers misbehaved with Ranchi University vice-chancellor S.S. Kushwaha, Jamshedpur Principals? Association decided to tighten the noose around teachers and other employees of their respective colleges.

Concerned with the incident that took place on the first anniversary of the Ranchi University?s branch office in Jamshedpur, heads of all the seven constituent issued a notification asking the teaching and non-teaching staff to route grievances and memorandums through them.

?The association?s decision is an encroachment on our rights. We will continue to address our grievances with university officials,? said a member of the teachers' association in the city.

Mobile squad

Cell phones were in demand at Ghurabandha area in Ghatshila subdivision recently after a rebels-triggered explosion, killed four persons. Policemen, who survived the ghastly incident, frantically looked for reporters and lensmen with cellphones. ?We have to inform our family in Jamshedpur about our well being. We cannot use the telephone at the police station as our bosses are busy in a meeting,? said a cop desperately looked a phone.

True colours

Some candidates, beaten in the recent two-day polls of the Telco Workers? Union (TWU) could easily impart lessons on gracious ways of accepting defeat. These candidates, like the victorious ones, smeared gulal on each other and danced to the tunes of the drums when the results were announced.

?So what if we have been defeated in the elections. We shall try our luck next time,? quipped a candidate as he made merry near the union office along the supporters of the winning candidate.

According to these defeated candidates, the real victory for them was that the union had prevented any outside interference (read: district administration) in poll related matters.
