Auto-rickshaw drivers at the Bistupur-Adityapur stand sport their brand-new blue uniforms and identity cards on Thursday. The All India Motor Drivers’ Majdoor Welfare Association distributed identity and health cards as well as blue uniforms to the drivers. For the first time, thanks to the health card, all auto-rickshaw drivers, who are members of the outfit, and their families, are entitled to get free medical care and medicines for common ailments. The operators were charged between Rs 100 and Rs 150 for the uniforms. The ID cards, which cost Rs 10 each, bear the name, father’s name, address, blood group, post office, police station and driving licence information of each operator. Sources from the association said they would soon distribute uniforms and ID cards to auto-rickshaw drivers at other stands in and around Jamshedpur by this month-end. With East Singhbhum traffic police crackdowns on over-loading auto-rickshaw drivers creating news for all the right and wrong reasons in the city since Wednesday, this was one timely gift pack for the drivers.
